What Is A Protocol?

A protocol is a set of rules for how data is communicated between two or more computers.

In the case of VPNs, the protocol is a combination of encryption standards (security) and transmission protocols (speed). OpenVPN is open source, and built on a custom security protocol using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS). It can create secure point-to-point or site-to-site connections. It uses digital certificates to authenticate data. OpenVPN provides the highest levels of speed and security through this protocol, and all of the OpenVPN products, such as OpenVPN Access Server, are built on the OpenVPN protocol.
