What Is An IP Address?
An IP address is the internet version of a home address for your computer, which is identified when it communicates over a network.
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number assigned to each device on a network. Think of it as a home address for your computer — similar to how you receive a letter in the mail to your physical address, the internet needs your IP address so you can receive your emails and other important data.
An internet-capable device will have one of two different kinds of IP addresses:
A static IP address, which means it doesn’t change, or
a dynamic IP address, which means the address can change on connection.
