Can I Split My Access Server License?

Abstract

You can split your license key for OpenVPN Access Server by following these steps.

Question: Can I split up my license key into smaller ones?

Answer:

Yes, splitting your license key is possible, but it depends on your license type: subscription license, fixed license, or AWS license.

Subscription license

You can change the number of allowed connections for a subscription license by signing in to the Access Server portal and editing the existing subscription.

You can adjust the number of connections anytime and even purchase additional subscriptions. For example, if you have a 50-connection subscription, you can reduce it to 20 connections and buy a separate subscription for 30 connections.

Fixed license

For a fixed license, splitting the license key is only possible under specific conditions:

  1. The fixed license key has not yet been activated.

  2. Each new license key will have a minimum of ten connections.

For instance, a 30-connection fixed license key can be split into three keys with ten connections each. Contact OpenVPN Support through the support ticket system to split a fixed license key.

AWS license

If you have an AWS license purchased through Amazon's tiered instances, the license is automatically handled based on the instance type. Splitting an AWS license isn't typically applicable, as the licensing is tied to the specific EC2 instance launched from the AWS Marketplace.

Recommendation

While fixed licenses can be split under certain conditions, we recommend switching to a subscription license for more flexibility. Subscription licenses allow you to adjust the number of connections as needed easily. If you prefer to stay with a fixed license, you can activate multiple fixed license keys on the same Access Server to increase your connection capacity. For example, if you currently have a fixed license for ten connections, you can add another one for ten more connections, giving you 20 connections on that server.
