How Can I Load Balance My License?

Question: Does my subscription license cover all servers in a load-balanced setup?

Answer:

Whether your current software license covers multiple servers in a load-balanced setup depends on the type of license you have:

  1. Subscription License:

    • Shared licensing: You can activate it on multiple Access Server nodes simultaneously with a subscription license. The subscription will be shared across all servers, meaning you only need one subscription for the entire setup.

    • Connection sharing: The subscription allows all connected VPN clients across the servers to share the total number of allowed VPN connections. As long as the total number of connected VPN clients across all nodes doesn’t exceed the subscription limit, each node can connect the full number of allowed VPN connections. If the total exceeds the limit, the system automatically adjusts the connections to remain within the allowed number.

  2. Fixed License:

    • Single server only: Fixed license keys are tied to a single server and can't be shared across multiple servers. If you're using this model, you'll need a separate license key for each server in your load-balanced setup.

Load Balancing Considerations

  • Supported Setup: Load balancing using round-robin DNS with clustering is supported.

  • Unsupported Setup: Load balancing with a device or service that stands between the Access Server and the OpenVPN clients can cause issues and isn't supported. If you proceed with this, implementing sticky sessions may help reduce authentication problems.
