What's A Fixed License Key Reissue?
Do you reissue fixed license keys for Access Server? Get the answer here on how.
Question: What is a fixed license key reissue?
Answer:
A fixed license key reissue is a process where an existing, activated fixed license is revoked and replaced with a new one. This is often necessary when moving a license from one server to another or when a server's hardware or software configuration has changed significantly. For example, if you've reinstalled your server or replaced key hardware components like the mainboard or network card, the original license key may no longer be valid. The reissue allows you to activate the license on the updated server configuration.
Question: Why would my fixed license stop functioning?
Answer:
If your fixed license was working but suddenly isn't, it could be due to one of two reasons:
The license has expired.
The hardware or software on your server has changed significantly, leading the licensing system to believe it's a different system.
If your license has expired, it can't be reissued. If the system configuration has changed, a reissue may be necessary.
Question: How long does the old fixed license remain active after a reissue?
Answer:
When we perform a fixed license reissue, the old license remains functional for up to two weeks. This grace period allows you to migrate settings and test your new setup. After this period, the old license may stop functioning abruptly, so it's essential to decommission the old server or remove the license from the file system if you plan to keep the server running.
Question: Is there an alternative to fixed licenses that avoids the need for reissues?
Answer:
Yes, OpenVPN offers subscription licenses that don't require reissuing fixed licenses. Subscription licenses can be activated multiple times and on OpenVPN Access Servers simultaneously, sharing the subscription across installations. This model eliminates the need to reissue fixed licenses when reinstalling or moving to new hardware.
Question: What about AWS licenses?
Answer:
When you purchase from the AWS Marketplace (identified by the "(xx connected devices)" in the title), you are purchasing an AWS license. Licensing is handled automatically. If these instances are not properly licensed, refer to the AWS license troubleshooting topic.
