Tutorial: Create and Use Proxy Settings

Abstract

Configure and apply proxy settings to route VPN traffic with OpenVPN Connect

You can configure proxy settings directly in OpenVPN Connect to route VPN traffic through an HTTP or SOCKS proxy server.

This tutorial explains how to create a proxy configuration and apply it to a connection profile in OpenVPN Connect.

Prerequisites

  • OpenVPN Connect installed.

  • The proxy server's hostname or IP address.

  • Port number.

  • (Optional) Username and password for proxy authentication.

Step 1: Create a proxy configuration

  1. Launch OpenVPN Connect.

  2. Top or click the menu icon.

  3. Click Proxies.

  4. Click Add.

  5. Enter the details for your proxy:

    • The Proxy Friendly Name.

    • The Proxy Hostname or IP.

    • The Port.

    • The Username.

    • The Password.

    • And whether to use basic authentication.

  6. Click Save.

Your new proxy will now appear in the list of saved proxies.

Step 2: Apply the proxy to a VPN profile

Once you've created a proxy configuarion, you can assign it to a specific VPN profile:

  1. Launch OpenVPN Connect.

  2. Click or tap the Edit icon for the configuration profile you want to apply the proxy.

  3. Under Proxy, select the desired proxy.

  4. Click or tap Save.

The VPN connection for this profile will now route through the selected proxy when you connect.

Notes

  • Multiple Proxies: You can create and manage multiple proxy configurations and switch between them as needed.

  • Per-Profile Control: Each connection profile can use a different proxy or none at all, depending on your network setup.
