How to Install OpenVPN Connect on macOS

Overview

Install OpenVPN Connect on macOS for use with OpenVPN servers. This applies to the OpenVPN open-source project and other VPN services using the OpenVPN protocol.

Prerequisites

  • A Mac running a supported version of macOS.

  • Access to an OpenVPN server or a profile from a VPN provider using the OpenVPN protocol.

  • A valid VPN configuration file or connection URL.

Installation steps

  1. Download and install OpenVPN Connect:

    • Visit the OpenVPN Connect section on the OpenVPN website.

    • Download the macOS installer.

    • Open the .dmg file and follow the prompts to drag the OpenVPN Connect app to the Applications folder.

  2. Open the OpenVPN Connect app:

    • Once installed, open the OpenVPN Connect app from the Applications folder.

    • Review and agree to the data usage policy.

  3. Import a VPN profile:

    • After opening the app, you can import your VPN profile using one of the following methods:

      1. Import from a file: If you have a .ovpn profile file, click File and browse to the location of the profile on your Mac.

      2. Import from a URL: If your VPN provider provides a connection URL, select URL and enter the URL to import the profile.

      3. Import from a VPN provider: Some VPN providers allow direct integration, enabling you to import profiles through their apps or services.

  4. Connect to the VPN:

    • Once the profile is imported, select it and click Connect.

    • You may be prompted to allow OpenVPN Connect to make changes to your system to establish the VPN connection. Click Allow or Yes as needed.

    • Once connected, the VPN status displays as active.

This installation guide provides the steps to install OpenVPN Connect and join your CloudConnexa environment.

Before you Begin

Find the invitation email sent by your CloudConnexa administrator. This email includes your invitation to join CloudConnexa and your CloudID, Username, and Temporary Password. If you don't have that email, ask your CloudConnexa administrator for help.

Install the app and connect to your CloudConnexa

To connect to your CloudConnexa account, follow these steps:

  1. Download the OpenVPN Connect app from our website or the link in your invitation email.

  2. Wait until the download completes, then open it.

  3. Select the installer for your device (mac with Intel processor or mac with Apple chip).

  4. Click Continue when the installer window opens.

  5. Agree to the EULA and install.

  6. When prompted, enter your device password to install.

  7. Click Close when the installation completes.

  8. You're prompted if you want to move the installation file to the trash; you can click Move to Trash.

  9. From your Applications, click the OpenVPN Connect icon to launch the app.

  10. Click through the tutorial and agree to the EULA.

  11. Click to add a new profile.

  12. On the Import Profile window, select URL and enter the CloudID from your invitation email.

  13. Enter your Username and Temporary password from your invitation email.

  14. At the prompt, enter a new password and confirm it.

  15. Accept the Terms of Service and click Change Password.

  16. Select your desired region if prompted.

  17. Click Connect.

This installation guide provides the steps to install OpenVPN Connect and connect to Access Server.

Before you begin

Ensure you have a username and password to connect to Access Server. If you don't have one, contact your Access Server administrator.

Install the app from the Client Web UI and connect to Access Server

  1. Open a browser and navigate to your Access Server Client Web UI.

  2. Sign in with your username and password.

  3. Click on the macOS icon.

  4. Wait until the download completes, then open it.

  5. Select the installer for your device (mac with Intel processor or mac with Apple chip).

  6. Click Continue when the installer window opens.

  7. Agree to the EULA and install.

  8. When prompted, enter your device password to install.

  9. Click Close when the installation completes.

  10. You're prompted if you want to move the installation file to the trash; you can click Move to Trash.

  11. From your Applications, click the OpenVPN Connect icon to launch the app.

  12. Click through the tutorial and agree to the EULA.

  13. Click on your profile to connect to Access Server.

Tip

The URL for your Client Web UI is the hostname or IP address of your Access Server. Ask your administrator for help if you don't have that.
