Working with connection profiles

The topics in this section will help you manage profiles in OpenVPN Connect:

Understanding Connection Profiles

Connection profiles (.ovpn text files) contain the directives, parameters, and certificates required to establish the client-server VPN connection. These commonly include addresses and ports to contact the server, information for verifying peer identity, securing the TLS control channel, and other settings.

Different types of connection profiles are available for different use cases. Understanding your choices in connection profiles should help you select the best profile for your clients and users.

With OpenVPN Connect, you have three options for obtaining a connection profile:

  1. Import a connection profile from file.

  2. Import a connection profile from URL.

  3. Install OpenVPN Connect with a bundled profile. This option is only available for Access Server users.

If you installed OpenVPN Connect to use with Access Server at the request of your IT department, contact them at this point for further instructions. They'll be able to help you get your connection profile. You can refer to some of our helpful Access Server documentation as well.

If you installed OpenVPN Connect to use with CloudConnexa at the request of your IT department, contact them at this point for further instructions. They'll be able to help you get your connection profile. You can refer to some of our helpful CloudConnexa documentation as well.

OpenVPN Connect does offer a built-in VPN service. If you need help getting a connection profile, refer to How to Get Your Connection Profile.

OpenVPN Connect doesn't provide VPN service

OpenVPN Connect works with all OpenVPN protocol-compatible VPN servers or services but doesn't offer a built-in VPN service. Instead, it's the way you connect with your VPN service through a connection profile.
