Cloning or Copying an Access Server Installation

Abstract

Fixed license keys are single activation keys locked to the hardware/software combination and can't be moved to another system.

Question: Can I clone, image, or copy my Access Server installation without affecting the licensed state?

Answer:

Subscription license

Yes, if your Access Server uses a subscription license (monthly or yearly), you can safely clone or copy the machine. The new copy will retain the same subscription license. You can run multiple Access Servers under the same subscription but can't have multiple subscriptions on a single Access Server.

Fixed license

No, you can't clone or copy the server if your Access Server is activated with a fixed license key (in the format #EXA-MPLE-LICE-NSE#). Fixed license keys are tied to the specific hardware/software configuration of the server on which they were initially activated. The fixed license will not work on the new system if you clone or copy the server. If you lose the original server or the license key stops working, you must contact OpenVPN for a license key reissue, provided the key is still valid and not expired.

AWS license

Yes, if you have an AWS license launched from the AWS Marketplace (with "xx connected devices" in the title), it is automatically licensed and billed through Amazon AWS. On the Activation page of your Access Server, you will see "AWS paid AMI." You can stop, image, and launch a new instance from the AMI image without affecting the licensed state. The new EC2 instance will also be automatically billed and licensed.
