# Access Server Backups and Recovery Guide

We recommend that you safeguard your VPN server and client configurations with backups.

Access Server saves all of your network specifications in configuration files. By default, these files are saved in an SQLite3 database on the same server. Optionally, Access Server can store configuration files on a separate database server.

These tutorials provide you with steps on making backups, recovering backup files, and moving from the SQLite3 database to a database server:

- [Tutorial: How to Back Up Access Server Configuration](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/tutorials/tutorial--configuration-backup.md)
- [Tutorial: How to Recover a Server with SQLite3 Dump Backup Files](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/tutorials/tutorial--recover-with-backup-files.md)
- [Tutorial: Change the Database Backend to MySQL or Amazon RDS with the Admin Web UI](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/tutorials/tutorial--change-db-backend-gui.md)
- [Tutorial: Manually Change the Database Backend to MySQL or Amazon RDS from the Command Line](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/tutorials/tutorial--change-db-backend-cli.md)

> **Tip**
>
> We recommend creating regular backups and automating the task, such as using a cron job to manage backup tasks unattended.

## Creating a backup VPN tunnel

This topic specifically addresses making configuration backups to protect your Access Server setup.

If you need help creating a backup VPN tunnel, refer to the [high-availability topic](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/high-availability.md). Access Server supports running a [cluster of servers](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/cluster-setup.md) or creating a [failover setup](https://openvpn.net/as-docs/failover-setup.md). Either provides a backup VPN solution, ensuring clients maintain a connection if a server fails.
