We already utilize nrpe to check HD health etc.  Right now I punch through
the ports for nrpe through the clients firewall.  Once I figure out how to
have the monitoring server cross the VPN we will go that route.

nrpe could be helpfull in fact

That way, you just need your OpenVPN server to see the clients.
