As another possibility, have a look at httptunnel, which encapsulates any 
bidirectional data stream into HTTP requests.

BTW, have you checked whether port 53 is firewalled? It often isn't with 
sloppy firewalls.

To James & Co: A really cool thing would be an OpenVPN-over-DNS mode. :-)
DNS is *always* available, it's UDP (perfect for our needs), and apparently 
arbitrary data can be transported quite easily and efficiently, see
<http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/nstx/>.
