By not using certificates, you're weakening security substantially. Please
reconsider -- you can use certificates *and* usernames/passwords together
-- or at least use a tls-auth key.

That said: OpenVPN already comes with a plugin and a script for doing
usename/password validation via PAM (the former using the plugin
interface, the latter using the auth-user-pass-verify interface), so you
can use that to connect to LDAP.

Yes, there are examples -- but you should be able to find them in the
mailing list archives, included with the source package, etc.\
