I'm not running any firewall and as to the disabled adapter that is perhaps
the case.
The answer to the question below will help me.

The good news is that I've had forward progress but I'm not there yet.  I
can now see that both sides
are connected - green lights all around !! .  But I can't ping the
server10.3.0.1 or the (client) 10.3.0.2

Question: In network connections I have two icons.  1 for the local network
the other for tap-win32 adpter v8. which are bridged together.  Do I have to
manually set the IP address for the tap-win32 device or leave it as 'obtain
automatically'?
