I have a functional vpn from a Windows XP client to a Linux Server. I
am using the 'redirect-gateway' option to push the client's IP traffic
through the tunnel. This is working fine, except that monitoring
network traffic from that client shows that DNS queries are not being
routed through the tunnel - they are going to the client's local DNS
server. I have also pushed 'dhcp-option DNS 192.168.15.1' to the
client. An ipconfig /all on the client shows that the TAP adapter has
been assigned the appropriate DNS server. In the Windows Network
Connections 'Advanced Settings' the TAP adapter is set as the highest
binding. An nslookup from the client uses the appropriate remote DNS
server. However normal web browsing does not. If I manually change the
DNS server for the client's ethernet connection to 192.168.15.1 it then
pushes all DNS queries through the tunnel. This obviously won't work
for the long term or for many clients, however! Any input as to why DNS
is not going through the tunnel would be much appreciated! Thank you!
