[Openvpn-users] Routed or bridged

Hi there guys,

I have been playing with OpenVPN for a while now and have established a routed vpn but it does not seem to work for what I need.

What I am trying to achieve is as follows.

I have a central Win2K3 server with public IP with a monitoring package on it.

I now have smaller networks each of which has a Windows XP box that connects to the net. I would like the windows XP box to vpn in and in turn allow me to ping and gather SNMP data from all the devices behind the windows XP box. (These smaller devices are not PC’s but Access points) I use 172.16.*.* for these smaller networks. There are many smaller networks that I would like to monitor.

In this scenario would a bridged VPN or a Routed VPN work best. I have been trying for a week to get this right and now I am asking for any input. The configurations are as follows for each machine.

WIN2K3 Server

Public IP Address.

Internal Adapter set to 172.16.1.1

Network-bridge adapter created as 172.16.10.1

Windows XP 1

Network Card 1 ( Internet access NIC)                                             172.23.90.169

Network Card 2 (Private network that I am wanting to monitor)      172.16.2.1

Devices that need to be monitored on this network are 172.16.2.*

Windows XP network 2

Network Card 1 ( Internet access NIC)                                             172.23.90.169

Netwrok Card 2 (Private network that I am wanting to monitor)      172.16.3.1

Devices that need to be monitored on this network are 172.16.3.*

My problem is I am not sure if I need to bridge the client side private adapters with the VPN Tap adapter.

I will have up to 45 XP networks that I want to monitor.

Any help in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Kind regards and many thanks

Anthony
