The auth-user-pass password is used only at VPN connect time. The VPN 
doesn't know or care anything about the underlying connection protocols 
-- so samba's authentication mechanism is completely unrelated.

Yes, the OpenVPN GUI for Windows doesn't cache passwords -- but the one 
for MacOS does, and other hypothetical GUIs for Windows may. Having a 
trustworthy client environment is important.
