The man page clearly specifies this in the entry for the 
client-config-dir directive: "After a connecting client has been 
authenticated, OpenVPN will look in this directory for a file having the 
same name as the client's X509 common name." Thus, it is the common name 
used to specify the file in which directives will be found.

The man page also specifies a mechanism for using the username passed in 
via auth-user-pass in place of the common name, via the 
username-as-common-name directive.


Please read the man page before referring to the mailing list, and 
*particularly* before criticizing the documentation on the -dev list.
