Right, after some poking I have found I can make it almost work right
by:

1: Discover the primary adaptor ID in scutil.

> show State:/Network/Global/IPv4

2: Set the resolver up to put the supplied ones in first and then add   
   to the search path.

> get Setup:/Network/Service/PRIMARY_ID/DNS
> d.show
> d.add ServerAddresses * 192.9.200.5 192.168.0.3
> d.add DomainName thefoundry.co.uk danalderman.co.uk
> d.add SearchDomains thefoundry.co.uk danalderman.co.uk
> set Setup:/Network/Service/4C5130E7-92D6-4498-B28D-795D7E28073E/DNS

Now... I wonder if we can make NMB work too...
