So you're thinking of something like a force-client-version directive? I was thinking more along the lines of just exporting it in an environment variable to be handled by scripts -- but then, I suppose those approaches aren't mutually exclusive.

Yes i am thinking of just that. The reason is to gain more control, but i guess to some it is bloat.
