Have you considered taking a shot at writing a patch yourself?
No. I haven't actually looked at the code of OpenVPN (yet).
While you are at it, it would be nice if the version could also
be reported to the client-connect script or the --client-config-dir
such that one could allow this particular client to have a non
standard version.
