[Openvpn-users] compiling openvpn-down-root on OS X 10.4.3

my apologies if this is a blindingly obvious question, but i'm trying to 
get openvpn-down-root plugin to compile on OS X 10.4.3 so that i can get 
the client.down.osx.sh script [1] to run properly with tunnelblick [2] 
and am running into problems.  i grabbed the openvpn-2.0.5 tarball but 
when i try to compile the tarball, i get a series of compilation errors, 
including "unrecognized option `-shared'", which apparently should be 
-dynamiclib on OS X [3]; but if i change that flag in the Makefile then 
i get  "unknown option character `o' in: -soname ".  it doesn't seem to 
matter if i use gcc-3.3 or gcc-4.0, both of which are installed on my 
machine.

i could work through these problems but it seems like i might be walking 
down the wrong path since the email author in [1] claims that the plugin 
"builds cleanly on OS X (10.4, at least)" and i can't see that anyone 
else is having these issues which makes me think i'm missing something 
stupendously obvious. 

if anyone could point me the way to the cluestick, i'd be mighty obliged.
