Hi Guys,
This is a rather strange one. I have the following scenario I'm
considering, and Im curious to know if anyone else has tried
something like this, or could give me some kind of indication as to
thoughts on the idea, as well as hardware specifications I would
need to actually do this.
We have a 112mbit international line, that is currently virtually
saturated, the idea is to put 2 boxes on either side of that line,
both running openvpn. We would then form a tunnel between them,
and turn on LZO compression, in effect providing us with
compression over our line. The data carried over the line is
general internet access (the line belongs to an NREN in South
Africa, and is used to provide general internet to the entire
higher education sector in south africa).
My questions are as follows,
a.) What kinda hardware would I need to real time compress this
much traffic, considering the *VAST* number of tcp sessions being
formed between the universities and various places on the internet,
the high PPS rates we run on that line, the throughput etc.
b.) Would I see a huge latency increase doing this
c.) Any other general comments about a solution like this
Anyone who can give me some advice, please let me know
If you control both ends, why not simply just use something that
compresses each and every packet, even the header as well.
Then either end just decompresses every packet and does something
with it. The overhead should be smaller than using openvpn.
