I have seen this sort of issue when the client cannot talk to the server's
IP address when the tunnel is up.
In one case, it was because the client was getting a route pushed to it that
included the server's IP (Ie. the server was on 10.10.2.3 and I was pushing
a 10.10.2.0/24 route to it).
Make sure you are not trying to talk to the server via the tunnel interface
after it comes up.
