subnet - if it is a class c network, it usually conflicts with a
gateway's ip. Then one would not need to push routing information to the
client.
When using tun mode you usually use a dedicated /24 network for OpenVPN,
so there is no conflicts with other gateways on this subnet.
When using tap mode there could be a conflict yes, but if you don't use
the macro directives --server or --server-bridge you can manully chose
what IP address the server should use with --ifconfig instead.
