What am I missing; what am I doing wrong? Is there a
better way to get a user name and password prompt?

As far as I remember the username/password authentication requires a PUSH/PULL channel that is only available when running in server mode (which in turn requires TLS mode, not a shared secret).

I havn't checked what the man page says, but I agree with you that these dependencies should be documented in the man page for the --auth-user-pass[-verify] options.
