"client" mode, which your client.conf specifies, only works against a
server which is running OpenVPN 2.0's multi-client server mode.

Are you quite certain you can't compile OpenVPN 2.0 on the server? Were
the issues you had caused by a RPM you were trying to use claiming that
its dependency check failed, or by the configure script itself complaining
that it was unable to proceed?
