Just as a followup to my self here:

Using the exact same config files, everything works perfect when set
to TCP. As soon as it is changed to UDP, these errors kick in.

So, I have a work around for now. But, this does indicate to me
something is wrong with either the tun driver on OS X, or openvpn on
OS X.
