[Openvpn-users] Extra latency and timeouts.

Hi all

I have got our first intraoffice VPN up and running using OpenVPN but am getting
serious lag/latency. The connection is from Sweden (where I am now) to our head
office in Australia. If I do a normal ping to one of the head office servers,
the average ping is about 350ms. Pretty terrible and I am looking at ways to
improve that with the ISP. Anyway, what is of even more concern is the ping when
I target something that goes through the VPN. Teh average is about 450ms with
fairly constant spikes up to 800ms and even up to 1100ms!

Here are pings done simulataneously to the VPN server's external/valid/piblic IP
address:

Pinging 203.XXX.XXX.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 203.XXX.XXX.2: bytes=32 time=367ms TTL=232
Reply from 203...2: bytes=32 time=356ms TTL=232
Reply from 203..2: bytes=32 time=375ms TTL=232
Reply from 203..2: bytes=32 time=373ms TTL=232
Reply from 203..2: bytes=32 time=365ms TTL=232
Reply from 203..2: bytes=32 time=369ms TTL=232
Reply from 203..2: bytes=32 time=397ms TTL=232
Reply from 203..2: bytes=32 time=375ms TTL=232

Ping statistics for 203.XXX.XXX.2:
Packets: Sent = 8, Received = 8, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 356ms, Maximum = 397ms, Average = 372ms

And to its VPN IP address:

Pinging 192.168.15.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=625ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=629ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=682ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=521ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=728ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=725ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=672ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.15.1: bytes=32 time=605ms TTL=63

If I ssh into the VPN server, I can see the load is 0.00 and I can ping all the
local servers in the head office from that box at standard LAN speeds (about
0.1ms - 0.2ms).

Any pointers on where to look for a slow down?

Thanks!

Andrew

PS - I have posted this over at SourceForge but this list seems to get more
trafic than the forums there.
