There was a topic like this discussed earlier this year, but I think with 10,000+ you would be out there on the frontier.

However, you will definitely need redundant/load balanced servers and if you want to use certificates, a hardware SSL accellerator card in each server.

As servers, you might wanna consider Dual Xeon's, like 2.8Ghz each. Memory usage is not that high, so 2 - 4GB should be fine. With the hardware SSL accellerator, each server should be able to handle 1,000+ clients, or more.

Geoff Nordli wrote a little howto for failover, you can find it in the archives with the title "mini-howto: Create redundant openvpn servers with linux-ha heartbeat", posted on Tue 2/22/2005.

Of course, take car of your bandwidth, too!

Subject: [Openvpn-users] Scalability?

Hi,

we are currently in the process of evaluating openvpn for use in one of our
projects. The project would include the use of 10000+ clients. Openvpn docs
state that it scales to 'hundreds or thousands of users', but what about further
scalability? Does anyone have any experience with such a high number of clients?
How would it impact the server-side? Is it possible to do?
