Using 2.0-beta15 on Fedora 2

If i put mktun in the config file, openvpn does not start. Upon
launching it, it dies silently.
Remove mktun, and all is well. In fact, this message was sent through an
OpenVPN tunnel. :-)

You're not supposed to put mktun in the config file!

Use mktun to create a persistent tun/tap interface before starting openvpn like:

openvpn --mktun --dev tap0

then use --dev tap0 to tell openvpn to use the interface you have created.
