Then you've blocked too much. It's not the problem of openvpn if you
block too much on your firewall so that your applications don't run
anymore. 
I believe you need ports 135, 137-139 (TCP+UDP) and 445 (TCP) to run the
stuff.

Well, on your winXP box, in your network preferences you can specify a
WINS-Server. 
You also need to make sure your samba/windows server acts as a WINS
server. Have a look at the samba documentation / windows help on how to
do that.
