It's not the problem of openvpn if you block too much on your firewall so that your applications don't run anymore. Well, on your winXP box, in your network preferences you can specify a WINS-Server. You also need to make sure your samba/windows server acts as a WINS server. Have a look at the samba documentation / windows help on how to do that.
