I would suggest running at verb 5 on both ends, instead of running as a service, right client on the config file and run it interactively. Do you see the RWRWRW when trying to ping?

I would look at the XP firewall settings and make sure that the adapter is setup as a trusted link or turn the XP firewalls off on both ends for testing.

Also, you may want to grab some type of packet sniffer to watch the traffic.
