whilst i can't be 100% certain that it's not the
router, i don't have any problems with other software-
ultravnc, for example. uvnc uses port 5900 - if i
disable the vnc software and use 5900 for openvpn, i
can still establish connections through the routers
and across the internet; client and server will
connect, however, no ping.

this is why i'm thinking more in terms of faulty
config files...
