On one hand, use very deep transmit queues and the largest MTU/MRU you
can get on the connection.

This will give you the highest throughput at the expense of the highest
latency.


On the other hand, use very shallow transmit queues and a small MTU/MRU;
512 bytes is pretty common.

This will give you reasonable latency performance without *too* much
impact on bulk data transmission.


On the third hand, disable error correction and compression in the
modem, and use a smaller MTU/MRU.

This will reduce the latency of the modem link which, these days, is
often as high as the entire rest of the packet path.

The cost, of course, is that you are more likely to suffer packet loss,
which the lower MTU/MRU reduces the cost of recovering from.


At the end of the day, though, there really are not *that* many things
which make a big difference to the "performance" of a serial modem for
any value of performance.
