What I think you're doing is this:

eth0 pre-existing connection
connect to the VPN peer over eth0
create a bridge
add tap0 to the bridge
add eth0 to the bridge
...and you lose your VPN connection.

What you need to be doing is this:

create a bridge
add eth0 to the bridge
configure br0's IP address, default gw, etc (dhcp?)
connect to the VPN peer over br0
add tap0 to the bridge


I have the same problem with a server with eth1 connected to internet (dhcp) and eth0 to the LAN. Which NIC should I connect to the bridge if I want "!road warriors" to be able to access the LAN? When I add it, should everything that referenced to eth1/eth0 use br0 instead?
