Aha, I see what's going on.  OpenVPN 2.0 doesn't support "iroute" usage in
"client-config-dir" files when running in "dev tap" mode.  This has been 
discussed before on the openvpn-users list, is something that's on the 
wish list to change, but is currently not supported because of the extra 
complexity needed to maintain both a MAC-based and IP-based internal 
routing table.

So the bug here is that OpenVPN should have flagged a warning that 
iroute and dev tap are incompatible directives, rather than hitting the 
assertion.
